Fallon is scarred.\u00a0 She carries both physical and emotional scars from the fire that she survived on November 9th<\/sup> when she was 16.\u00a0 She harbors resentment toward her father, a B list actor who is a legend in his own mind, because he forgot it was her weekend to spend with him and did not think to alert her of the engulfing flames before making his own escape.\u00a0 Consequently, she does not respond favorably when her father, in no subtle terms over lunch two years after the fire, tells her that her own rising star has burned out in the film industry unless an upcoming role includes a female character with obvious scars covering one side of her body.\u00a0 She is about to have a rage induced meltdown in front of her father when their tense lunch is interrupted by Ben Kessler, a disheveled yet handsome college student, who poses as Fallon\u2019s boyfriend in order to salvage the remnants of Fallon\u2019s diminishing dignity.<\/p>\n After her father leaves the restaurant, Fallon and Ben have an immediate connection.\u00a0 Unlike so many, Ben is not afraid to look at Fallon\u2019s scars.\u00a0 Fallon is taken aback by Ben\u2019s infatuation with her as she has not received such favorable attention from guys (or anyone, really) since before the fire.\u00a0 However, their futures do not seem to be following the same trajectory.\u00a0 She is set to move across the country to New York the following day.\u00a0 Even though Fallon\u2019s instincts are telling her there is something special about Ben, she is of the mindset that she cannot fully explore her full career potential if she is also invested in a serious, long-distance relationship at 18.\u00a0 Against Ben\u2019s instincts, he agrees to Fallon\u2019s idea of meeting up in the same restaurant exactly one year from this day to catch up on each other\u2019s lives.\u00a0 They spend the next 4 years apart except for the one day a year where they meet up to reconnect.\u00a0 Things between the two of them are too good to be true\u2026until they are not.\u00a0 Over time, Fallon starts to question where her reality ends and Ben\u2019s reality begins.\u00a0 As the years pass, she struggles to understand whether she is the leading heroine in her own life\u2019s story, or the unfortunate supporting actress in Ben\u2019s fictional story.\u00a0 It will take many twists and turns before they figure out their real<\/em> place in each other\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n Why I read it:\u00a0 Recommendation from a friend<\/p>\n Trigger warnings: sexual content, suicide, accidental death, language<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I was truly invested in this story, and I desperately wanted to see what happens.\u00a0 I thought the plot twist at the end was believable and explained well so the reader was not left to question anything about the events.\u00a0 Meeting on the same day every year, I thought, was a clever concept, and I thought it was helpful that the book didn\u2019t go into their time apart (that would really drag on) as the next section picked right up on November 9th<\/sup> of the following year.<\/p>\n I thought Fallon\u2019s character was developed well, but I wish there had been a little more poured into Ben.\u00a0 We get a good account of his dark past, and I *LOVE* how the author told his story, I was just left wanting a little bit more about him from the author.<\/p>\n At times, I was unsure whether I was reading a romance book or a thriller, and I enjoyed that it was a little of both.\u00a0 I really wanted more out of the ending.\u00a0 It felt so rushed and when I put it down I was thinking, \u201cWait\u2026do we even get an epilogue?!\u201d\u00a0 I felt that after the emotional roller coaster I had just experienced that I deserved a little bit more conclusion.\u00a0 It was a solid, fast paced read; it was just lacking in a few areas for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
